St. Vincent Hospice provides a special way of caring for the person whose life expectancy is limited.  The program focuses on maintaining the quality of life and death by keeping patients pain-free and comfortable while providing for spiritual, emotional, social, and physical needs.

Hospice is a concept of care, not a place of care.  When the family chooses to care for the patient at home, the hospice staff works closely with the patient, family, and physician to carry out an appropriate plan of care.  When a patient is not able to remain at home, St. Vincent hospice staff works with the patient and family to find appropriate accommodations.  When a patient requires hospitalization for symptom control, hospice has arrangements with local hospitals in addition to having a separate, dedicated hospice inpatient unit.

Hospice care begins when curative treatment is no longer expected to be effective.  Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death, but recognizes death as a normal process and seeks to help patients and their families attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.
