Oncology Annual Report: Prostate Cancer
As these charts reflect, St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital statistics are lower
than the national and state statistics for prostate cancer because not every
patient is treated at the hospital but rather, most often, at a physician’s
office. The median age for prostate patients is between 60 and 70, but like
breast cancer, younger patients are being diagnosed due to screenings. For
instance, the AJCC Stage graph shows that Stage 2 is highest due to early
detection. The American Cancer Society recommends annual prostate-specific
antigen (PSA) testing and digital rectal exams beginning at age 50.
African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer are
advised to have annual testing beginning at age 45.

The median age for prostate patients is between 60 and 70, with the
percentage of cases split evenly (1 percent) between American Indian, Chinese
and Japanese populations. Caucasians and African-Americans still have the
highest numbers of diagnoses, with 81 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
