Fast Facts about Gynecologic Cancer

  • The American Cancer Society estimates more than 81,000 new cases of gynecological cancer in 2002. These cancers include ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal.

  • The American Cancer Society estimates more than 26,000 women will lose their life to gynecological cancers in 2002.

  • Most gynecological cancers are detected by obstetricians and gynecologists, and often time the surgeries are completed by gynecologists or general surgeons.

  • Endometrial cancer is the second or third most common cancer among women.

  • Each year, about 15,000 women in the United States learn that they have cervical cancer.

  • About 4,100 women will die from cervical cancer in the United States during 2002.

  • Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers. Most cases occur in women over the age of 50, but this disease can also affect younger women.

  • The American Cancer Society estimates that about 23,300 new cases (approximately 1 in 57 women) of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States during 2002.

  • An estimated 39,300 new cases of uterine cancer will be diagnosed in the United States during 2002.

  • An estimated 6,600 women in the United States will die from uterine cancer during 2002.

  • The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 1,200 new cases of uterine cancer in Indiana this year.
