St. Vincent Physician Network Nurse Practitioners

What is a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with a Master’s degree and advanced clinical experience, which enables him or her to diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses, either independently or as part of a health care team. A nurse practitioner provides some care previously offered only by physicians and has the ability to prescribe medications. Working in collaboration with a physician, a nurse practitioner provides high-quality, cost-effective and individualized care for the lifespan of patient's special needs.

What kind of care can nurse practitioner provide?

NPs focus largely on health maintenance, disease prevention, counseling and patient education in a wide variety of settings. With a strong emphasis on primary care, nurse practitioners are employed within several specialties, including pediatrics, school health, family and adult health, women's health, mental health, home care, geriatrics and acute care.   A nurse practitioner is qualified to provide a wide-variety of medical services, such as physical examinations, gynecological exams, and nutrition education.

Why choose a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner is able to provide individualized care that focuses not only on the health problem itself, but also on how these issues affect patients and their families.  Nurse practitioners emphasize health and wellness and are able to provide their patients with information and motivation to lead healthier lives.

When I call to schedule and appointment, can I schedule and appointment with a nurse practitioner?

You may specifically request an appointment with a Nurse Practitioner.   The Nurse Practitioner will perform an evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan, as well as arrange for follow-up care.  If you need a prescription or referral to a specialist, your nurse practitioner will be able to take care of that as well.

If I am seen by a nurse practitioner, will my insurance cover the visit?

Many insurance programs now pay for the services of nurse practitioners. The type of insurance you have will determine what types of services are covered.  Your reimbursement and co-pay responsibilities are the same as if you had been seen only by a St.Vincent Physician Network physician.
