Incontinence Services for Women
At St.Vincent Physical Therapy, we understand the unique needs of those experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction. With our specialized rehabilitation services for pelvic pain and dysfunction, we are committed to exceeding the expectations of these individuals in the communities we serve.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can manifest itself in several disorders such as urinary and bowel incontinence and pain during normal activities. These conditions can have a significant impact on one’s quality of life.
Incontinence
Are you having problems with bladder/bowel control to the point where you are experiencing wetting or soiling accidents that require you to wear protection pads or change your underwear often?
Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control. Urinary incontinence is the uncontrolled loss of urine, whether small wetting accidents or major amounts. Fecal Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bowel control that results in loss of stool or soiling of the underwear.
Because it is almost impossible to predict when and where the urge for urination or bowel movement will occur, social life, hygiene and intimacy are greatly affected.
Incontinence affects roughly 20 million adults and children. While many experience this problem, most are uncomfortable talking about it and are unaware of the interventions available to successfully treat bowel and bladder incontinence.
Pelvic Pain
Are you suffering from persistent pain in the lower abdominal and pelvic floor area? Do you have pelvic floor pain when sitting, voiding or during intimacy?
Chronic Pelvic Pain is mostly felt in the genital/rectal areas and can be aggravated by sitting, voiding or sexual activity. Most people with this condition have lived with it for at least six months. Like the problem of incontinence, those with pelvic pain are often uncomfortable discussing it and choose to suffer in silence.
Treatment Options
St.Vincent offers physical therapists with unique knowledge and skills to address the needs of those with incontinence and pelvic pain. We provide a conservative, non-surgical approach to the treatment of these conditions.
At St.Vincent Physical Therapy, a qualified physical therapist will perform an evaluation and guide you through a program that is specific to your problem. Exercise and biofeedback, proven effective in various studies, may be strong components of your treatment. The exercises are simple to perform but play a major role in managing your problem. State-of-the-art computerized biofeedback is an excellent tool for retraining the pelvic floor muscles and may be used to facilitate your progress. Your therapist will provide education on modifying diet and bladder habits. The program may also include manual therapy techniques for tight muscles, joints or scars, and other physical modalities such as electrical stimulation, heat/cold, or ultrasound for pain relief. The physical therapist will work closely with your physician throughout the program.
