Recovering from physical rehabilitation has never been easier as St.Joseph Hospital opened its west side Physical and Sports Therapy on July 23, 2007.  With the new location open, the rehabilitation office in the hospital has closed while the south side location will remain open.  With two convenient locations, care is always nearby when you need it most.

Occupational therapists evaluate and treat patients with emphasis on upper extremity dysfunction and promote independence through daily living skills.

St.Joseph Physical and Sports Therapy’s occupational therapists utilize a variety of techniques to address the needs of these patients, including:

  • Exercises for strengthening range of motion and coordination.
  • Splint fabrication.
  • Instructions on energy conservation techniques.
  • Adaptive equipment recommendations.
  • Instructions for activities of daily living, which can involve dressing,  bathing and kitchen mobility.

Speech-Language Pathology


Speech and language pathologists evaluate and treat patients with communication disorders. Service areas and common diagnoses include:

Neurological Communication Disorders

  • Aphasia – impairment of language affecting auditory comprehension, verbal expression, reading, writing and mathematical skills

  • Dysarthira – difficulty speaking due to motor weakness, slowness or lack of coordination with the tongue or lips

Comprehensive Regional Balance Center

 

St.Joseph Physical and Sports Therapy has partnered with Neurology of Indiana to form a Comprehensive Balance Center.  Aaron Kosberg, DPT, Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation and Justin Embry, DPT, OCS are Herdman Certified Vestibular Balance Specialists and Doctors of Physical Therapy who evaluate and treat patients with complaints of dizziness/vertigo, poor balance and other vestibular related deficits.  Patients will have access to the latest technology offered in balance therapy such as the NeuroCom® Balance Manager used to not only provide a detailed balance assessment but to treat as well.  To ensure comprehensive management, both therapists and neurologist meet on a weekly basis to discuss patient findings and progress care accordingly.

Stroke Support

 

St.Joseph Physical and Sports Therapy is partnered with the American Heart Association to form a Howard County Stroke Support Group for stroke survivors and their families.  The group meets the third Thursday of every month from 3 – 4:30 p.m. at St.Joseph Physical and Sports Therapy - Forest Park Classroom (2130 W. Sycamore St., Suite 140). 

 

Education from our certified speech pathologists for the survivors and their families include:

  • A better understanding of stroke recovery
  • Rehabilitation and prevention of recurrent strokes
  • Ability for stroke survivors to meet others with similar challenges and experiences
  • A structured approach for caregivers and family members to share and support each other

Amputee Support Group

"The Lifeline for Limb Loss"

 

St.Joseph Physical and Sports Therapy is partnered with the Amputee Coalition of America to form “The Lifeline for Limb Loss” a Howard County Amputee Support Group for amputee survivors and their families.

 

Dr. Teva Turner, physical therapist, as well as a variety of guest speakers will provide education for the survivors and their families.  The group was formed with the goals of providing:

v       A better understanding of amputee recovery and rehabilitation

v       Resources to assist in rehabilitation and prevention of additional limb loss

v       An outlet for amputee survivors to meet others with similar challenges and experiences

v       A structured approach for caregivers and family members to share and support each other

Free Courtesy Van
