Center for Healthy AgingGeriatric Assessment Program

This program assesses the functional, physical and neuropsychological capabilities of an individual 65 years of age or older.  It is comprised of three appointments spread over a 6-8 period.  The first appointment consists of the medical and neuropsychological evaluations and the total time of the visit may be 2 ½ to 3 hours.

This exam includes but is not limited to an inventory of medications (prescribed and over the counter), nutritional status, functional abilities, emotional and physical coping mechanisms and memory capacity.  These appointments are scheduled for a Monday or a Wednesday morning only.

Further testing and screening apart from this visit may be recommended upon completion of the geriatrician’s examination.  For example, it may be recommended that the individual has a head CT, MRI or physical therapy evaluation completed.

Final results are discussed and recommendations are presented to the patient and family in a follow-up visit.  The geriatrician manages the patient’s  progress for approximately 6-8 weeks. A written report containing all the recommendations is mailed to the patient’s primary care physician who continues providing the medical care once the geriatric assessment is completed.
