Joel M. Kary


Originally from Illinois, Dr. Kary completed his undergraduate studies at Anderson University in Anderson, IN with a degree in Athletic Training. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2003. His family medicine residency training was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the South Bend/University of Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Bend, IN. He served as an assistant team physician for football and basketball and head team physician for men’s soccer while at Notre Dame.


Dr. Kary is a team physician for Butler University, Lawrence North High School, and the Indiana Invaders track club. His work as a sports medicine physician has included serving at the USA Track and Field Championships, USA National Gymnastic Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships, and numerous other national/international sporting events. He currently serves on the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Committee.

Dr. Kary has a special interest in non-operative musculoskeletal medicine and management of medical conditions related to sports such as concussion, asthma, and mononucleosis. As a former college runner, he particularly enjoys the evaluation and management of running and endurance athlete injuries.

Dr. Kary is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
