After your surgery, you will have an empty stomach. Once awake, you will be allowed to increase your food intake gradually, starting with clear liquids and progressing to solid food. Anesthesia, narcotic pain medicine, iron supplements, reduced intake and decreased activity result in a slow-down in bowel action. You will probably experience a decrease in bowel movements; you may not have a bowel movement for a few days after surgery. Fluids, increased activity and a high-fiber diet help ensure normal elimination. If you are experiencing difficulty, let your nurses know so they can help you get back to your normal pattern. |
