Physical Therapy

You may begin physical therapy the afternoon of your surgery or the morning of your first post-operative day as ordered by your doctor. Your first visit will be at your bedside. A physical therapist will evaluate your strength, endurance and mobility. They therapist will help you set rehabilitation goals for gaining independence in an exercise program, getting in and out of bed and walking.

Your therapy sessions will also include instruction in the necessary precautions to take with your new joint. You will receive therapy twice a day. During these sessions, you will be encouraged to take an active role in your rehabilitation process. Only medical problems requiring bed rest will cancel therapy sessions.

Pain

You are encouraged to take your pain medication before your therapy. You may be able to lie quietly in bed without discomfort, but during physical therapy, your therapist will be helping you move your new joint. The medication will help make this procedure as comfortable as possible so that you can respond optimally. Refusing pain medication if you are having discomfort will slow your rehabilitation.
