Blood Conservation Program

With joint replacement surgery, there is the possibility that you may need a blood transfusion. Some factors that will increase your chances are:

  • Having bilateral joint surgery
  • Having 'revision' surgery (replacing an old knee or hip prosthesis)
  • Being 65 years of age or older
  • Being female

At St.Vincent, our philosophy is to decrease the use of blood transfusions unless medically necessary. Transfusing blood--no matter the source of the donation--is not without risk. If you do not wish to receive any donor blood for religious or personal reasons, please discuss this with your surgeon prior to your surgery date.
