One of the goals of the center is to become nationally and internationally known for the research we do. We want to establish research protocols that can answer important questions in joint replacement. In 10, 20 or 50 years, one of the prime contributions of this center will not only be in providing excellent care for St.Vincent patients but also in helping improve the care of joint replacement patients around the world.
Initially, our research will focus on outcomes, but eventually it will expand to technology, innovative surgical techniques, blood conservation strategies and other areas. It may include research that has nothing to do with the surgical procedure itself, such as testing new medications or a nonsurgical treatment for hip arthritis. We hope to evaluate new techniques, materials and other issues to see what works in the real world. Our aim is to improve the total patient experience.
The center will be a critical source of information for primary care physicians as well as surgeons. We consider it part of our job to be the expert resource physicians can turn to for the latest in joint replacement technology, outcomes and literature. A series of educational programs will bring the latest news in joint replacement to primary care physicians for the benefit of their patients.
