The Essential Areas for Continuing Medical Education
The ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) is a national organization which grants accreditation status to institutions and organizations that provide CME programs. This status gives organizations the authority to grant CME Category 1 Credit for educational activities.
In Indiana, our local state society, the ISMA, is responsible for overseeing this accreditation, and making sure all of the CME guidelines, or "Essential Areas" developed by the ACCME are being followed.
Since we are currently accredited by the state, we must adhere to these essential areas outlined below when planning CME programs. IF WE DO NOT FOLLOW THESE "ESSENTIAL AREAS" AS OUTLINED BY THE ISMA, ST. VINCENT HOSPITAL WILL NOT BE GRANTED ANOTHER ACCREDITATION PERIOD.
Since Continuing Medical Education is a departmentalized function at St. Vincent Hospital it is imperative that all departments follow these guidelines.
