Mission Statement

The mission of St. Vincent Hospital is to provide the highest quality of health care.  The Medical Education Department aims to support this mission by providing high quality continuing medical education (CME) activities.  CME will provide physicians with the opportunity to further develop their knowledge through individual and group learning activities.  The Continuing Medical Education Committee will monitor the quality of all programs conducted by St. Vincent Hospital.

Purpose: The purpose of St. Vincent Hospital’s CME program is to promote continuous improvement in physician competence by providing educational activities for physicians.  The activities will update physicians on new diagnoses and treatment modalities, improve clinical skills, improve physicians’ compliance with quality management issues, and promote cost effective and safe quality care. Activity directors will be encouraged to design and implement programs by identifying knowledge gaps within the department as well as consider the perceived needs of the medical staff.  CME activities will also be based on hospital data such as quality assurance studies as determined by the CME Committee.  The CME office will monitor programs for adherence to the guidelines for accreditation issued by the Indiana State Medical Association.

Content Areas: CME activities will reflect the diverse specialties represented within St. Vincent Hospital.  Content areas addressed may include compliance with regulatory core measures, current practices, requested specialty topics, new technological advances, and hospital identified needs.

Target Audience: CME programs will be designed primarily for all medical staff physicians and residents.  Some activities may include nurses and other supporting professional staff.  Distance learning activities available through a web portal will target doctors and other professionals residing in rural areas.

Type of activities provided:  The CME program will consist of single lectures, case presentations, general and specialty monthly lecture series, quarterly seminars, larger multi day conferences, simulations, workshops, and other approaches as deemed appropriate.  Enduring materials such as books, journals, CD-ROMs, and internet CME will also be made available.

Expected Results:  The expected result of St. Vincent’s CME activities is to improve physician competence.  Competence will be measured via a pre/post test, simulation, case based vignettes, role playing, or wet lab and a program evaluation.  The results will be analyzed by the CME Committee to determine the effectiveness of the activity content and identify practice gaps to be addressed in the future.
