Class: Glycemic Control in the Hosital Setting: What Every Nurse Should Know

Description:
This presentation will cover evidence based practice implications of glycemic control including nursing actions and safety measures in caring for patients with various settings and situations.

Objectives:
  • Understand EBP regarding impact of glycemmic control
  • Identify nursing actions that may adversely impact glycemic control
  • Understand policy re: timing of blood glucose testing, medication and meals
  • Understand the causes, signs, symptoms and treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia per the hypoglycemia protocol
  • Demonstrate proficiency in counting grams of carbohydrates and dosing insulin based on insulin to carbohydrate ratios
  • Identify appropriate nursing actions and scope of practice regarding use of Diabetes Medication order form
  • Identify the 4 survival skills of diabetes management including how to assess patients knowledge and ability to perform them
  • Understand the benefit of having a patient learn to administer insulin themselves beginning with their first dose of insulin
  • Identify how to instruct patients to recognize and treat hypoglycemia
  • Identify educational resources for patients and staff and how to access them
