This presentation is an overview and introduction to beginners of Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) as well as a refresher for the experienced VAD nurse.

Objectives:
  • Identify indications for ventricular assist devices
  • Understand hemodynamic physiology in relation to ventricular assist devices
  • Explain rationale for physical assessment conducted for the patient with a VAD
  • Match potential complications in VAD patients with appropriate nursing interventions
