Jill’s pregnancy wasn’t considered high risk. The trimesters came and went without incident, and everything seemed to be looking relatively normal. In fact, it wasn’t until Jill went to be induced at a hospital near her home that complications arose. A fetal monitor revealed that the situation was changing. Her unborn baby’s heart was having serious trouble. He needed help, and he needed it fast.

Suddenly, a routine procedure became an emergency caesarean section. To get the help he needed, her newborn son, Brett, was transferred by ambulance to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at St.Vincent Women’s Hospital.

Because Jill had just undergone surgery, she couldn’t go with him. She wasn’t able to hold her newborn son for the first four days of his life.

“It’s traumatic to have your baby taken away,” says Jill. “But I had peace of mind knowing that he was in great hands. When they told me where ? he was being transferred, there was not a doubt in my mind that was the best place in the city he could have gone.”

Brett spent four days in the NICU at St.Vincent Women’s Hospital. He needed blood transfusions and a little help breathing. But soon, all he needed was his mom – and he got to go home.

Today, Jill recommends the specialized capabilities of St.Vincent Women’s Hospital – even to moms who aren’t expecting complications. “When you have a normal pregnancy, you never think anything bad will happen. But If I had gone to St.Vincent to start with, it would have been so much easier.”

Brett’s tiny success story didn’t begin like the stories of many of the babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at St.Vincent Women’s Hospital. But it ended just as happily. Today Brett is a normal toddler. He’s a little shy, but catch him in the right mood and you just might get to see one of his patented dance moves.
