Natalie came into the world weighing only one pound and 12 ounces. She was born at just 26 weeks’ gestation after her mom, Beverly, was rushed to St.Vincent Women’s from her local hospital in Richmond because she was going into labor so early.
At the age of just four days, Natalie underwent her first surgery. Two others would follow. These operations helped repair her perforated small intestine and a valve between her heart and lungs. “I remember thinking ‘a baby this small can’t survive a surgery,’” recalls Beverly. But thanks to her fighting spirit – and the experienced St.Vincent Children’s staff – Natalie made it.
With time, and a lot of extra-special care, Natalie grew healthier. She grew larger, too. And after four months, she was finally ready to head home.
Even though it was a difficult time, Beverly is able to look back on the experience with fondness. “It was the hardest thing we’ve been through, but it was also the most life-changing and rewarding. We met so many wonderful people. I think that delivering at St.Vincent is part of why the outcome was so favorable. They went above the call of duty.”
