St. Vincent Health has been serving the health care needs of Indiana residents for more than 126 years. Our health ministry consists of 20 facilities, with a direct presence in 46 Indiana counties. The system is comprised of one quaternary facility, three tertiary hospitals, six critical access hospitals, six specialty hospitals, several joint venture partners and clinical affiliates.
A philosophy of strong partnerships with businesses, communities, physicians, associates and others is regarded by St. Vincent Health as essential to improving the health status of Hoosiers.
As advocates for a healthier society, we have developed strong partnerships with communities and individuals who share compatible values. We believe that health care should be kept local, which is why we have extended our reach beyond urban areas such as Indianapolis, Kokomo, and Anderson, and into rural communities where health services are often scarce.
St. Vincent Health is a member of Ascension Health of St. Louis, Missouri, which is the nation's largest Catholic and largest nonprofit health system. Created in 1999, Ascension Health is sponsored by the four providences of the Daughters of Charity, the Sisters of St. Vincent Kokomo of Nazareth and the Sisters of St. Vincent Kokomo of Carondelet. Coming together has allowed these sponsoring organizations to continue their vital role in the tradition and mission of Catholic health care.
The creation of a larger system helps ensure the vitality of these ministries as they continue to serve the needs of their local communities. Ascension Health's facilities are made up of a network of hospitals and other related health ministries that provide acute care services, long-term care, community health services, psychiatric facilities, rehabilitation and residential care. Ascension Health facilities are staffed with over 106,000 associates, located in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

Maintaining Good Health and Wellness
When St. Vincent Health vows to provide “Healthcare That Leaves No One Behind,” it’s not a hollow promise. For more than 126 years, our Catholic health ministry has been caring for the needs of individuals – body, mind and spirit. This is achieved through the work of our more than 13,000 dedicated associates, 2,500 physicians and countless community collaborators.
Our core value of Service of the Poor affirms our commitment to serving those who are physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially poor and vulnerable. We realize this by:
These promises have been kept through the more than $197 million in community benefit that St. Vincent Health provided in fiscal year 2012.

Becoming a nurse is a life changing experience. Registered Nurses solve problems, utilize complex critical thinking, deliver the majority of care to patients, and routinely perform life-saving efforts. During times such as these, more nurses are needed.
Registered nursing is one of the fastest growing career opportunities. The national Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 22 percent increase in RN employment nationwide between 2008 and 2018. In the Spirit of Caring, St. Vincent wants to help.
That’s why, in 2009, St. Vincent entered into a unique collaboration agreement with Marian University to expand the availability of future nurses. Together, a unique Marian University for St. Vincent accelerated nursing program and special simulation lab was developed to make it easier for individuals to change careers and become a Registered Nurse. Today it is Indiana’s only 16 month accelerated online bachelor’s degree program in nursing.
If you already have a baccalaureate degree in a non-nursing major, this 16-month accelerated BSN program at St. Vincent is for you.
Developed in collaboration with St. Vincent
Uniquely designed for students with a previous baccalaureate degree
Allows students to earn a BSN in 16 months
Classes start three times a year: January, May, August
The program is engaging and interactive. It blends the personal convenience of online course study with enriched clinical learning in the Marian University for St. Vincent simulation lab and at St. Vincent facilities throughout Indiana. You will be guided by faculty online and on-site in a flexible but deadline-driven setting that sufficiently prepares you for a career in nursing.
Graduates of the program receive a BSN degree from Marian University. They are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN in preparation for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana, and are also able to apply for graduate programs of study in nursing.
If you want to learn more about becoming a registered nurse through our partnership initiative, please complete the form within link below, or contact Deb Downard at deborah.downard@mariannursing.com.
SVH is an EEO/AA Employer M/F/Disability/VetThe need for advanced practice nurses continues to grow. As fewer physicians choose primary care specialties, more patients require critical care, and fewer nurse educators are available, registered nurses with a Master of Science in Nursing are highly sought after.
St. Vincent Health is addressing this rising demand for acute care nurse practitioners.
Through a partnership with Marquette University, registered nurses have the opportunity to earn their Master of Science in Nursing and specialize in adult-older adult acute care.
Marquette University’s ACNP program offers BSN-educated RNs the chance to earn their MSN degree.
Upon program completion, graduates are eligible to sit for the Adult-Gerontology ACNP certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and begin their advanced practice careers in adult acute care settings. With a Master of Science in Nursing, ACNP program graduates are eligible for advanced career options, including leadership, educator, and primary care roles.
Upon earning your MS in Nursing, ACNP graduates who remain employed with St. Vincent for a period of at least three years following graduation may participate in St. Vincent’s loan forgiveness program.
To learn more about how you can advance your nursing career while continuing to make a difference every day, contact a Marquette University ACNP admission advisor at 866-891-8443.
When a company is named Best Employer two years in a row, you know there must be something special about that company. At St. Vincent Health, that something is our associates and their efforts to be a light in our ministries and communities.
St. Vincent Health has been identified as one of 15 best health systems in the nation by the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: 15 Top Health Systems study. We are the only health system in Indiana and the Midwest to be honored in the large health system group.
Your efforts and commitment to improving the health and well being of our patients and families were a major factor in our receiving of this honor. This national recognition represents your dedication to our Mission, and you are to be commended for a job well done.
Winners of the 15 Top Health Systems award outperformed other providers by:
This annual, quantitative study uses objective, independent research and public data sources, and gathers individual hospital performance into system-level data. The study includes nearly every system with valid 2009 and 2010 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) and 2011 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. Key performance measures include: risk-adjusted mortality index; risk-adjusted complication index; risk-adjusted patient safety index; core measures mean percent; 30-day risk-adjusted mortality rate; 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted average length of stay; and HCAHPS scores (patient rating of overall hospital performance)
This recognition places St. Vincent Health in an elite lineup of outstanding health systems nationwide, which is a compliment to our associates and physicians who come to serve the St. Vincent Health ministry every day.
As a faith-based, not-for-profit health care system, our associates are guided by core values, which reflect its commitment to quality, compassion and affordability in health care.
"We are about doing the right thing for the right reason," said Doreen Holler, an RN with St. Vincent Kokomo in Kokomo, one of St. Vincent Health's 17 ministries.
St. Vincent Health refers to itself as a "health ministry," signifying its belief that it is a ministry of service of others. It seeks to provide spiritually centered, holistic care to patients and families. That outstanding care is what both patients and associates value from St. Vincent Health.
"The genuine caring attitude by all levels of staff for each other and the patients that enter here is what makes St. Vincent Health different," said Joan Branch, Medicaid Managed Care Biller at St. Vincent Kokomo.
"The best thing about working here is the attitude of caring, which is demonstrated among fellow associates and reflected in the provision of care to our patients and within the community as a whole," said RN Case Manager, Sharon McKnight of Saint John's Health System in Anderson.
A nearly 20-year veteran of St. Vincent Kokomo, Mary Beck, Microbiology Charge Tech, said the satisfaction she gets from taking care of patients is the main reason she loves her job. "It's the feeling I get in knowing that every day what I do helps people get appropriate treatment," Beck said.
"I was interested in seeking a position at St. Vincent Health because I liked what I saw in the people who worked there – a strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of the organization, and a desire to do everything they do with excellence and in a caring manner," said Jim Funk, Director of Organizational Development.
St. Vincent's dedication to caring extends to its associates, too.
"When we come to work, we bring our whole selves to the workplace – body, mind and spirit," Funk said. "St. Vincent recognizes that, and is committed to the development of all three of those aspects of our associates – just like the commitment we make to the care of our patients in body, mind and spirit."
St. Vincent Health invests in its associates' professional, personal and spiritual development to create a committed and effective workforce. It offers educational opportunities, an excellent benefits package, a family-friendly environment and seeks to be a place where top-notch medical professionals want to call home.
"It's a great place to be a part of," said Barbara Baker, Production and Catering Manager of St. Vincent Kokomo.
In an effort to foster associate satisfaction, St. Vincent Health seeks to give associates opportunities to have their opinions heard.
"We have a large voice," said Mike Bradshaw, Team Leader, Engineering Services from St. Vincent Carmel. "Our opinions and concerns are frequently sought after through associate surveys, forums and relaxed chat sessions with our leadership."
All these examples of St. Vincent caring for associates exemplify what sets it apart from other employers.
"I have worked in other hospitals, and I feel this one cares about its associates," said Doreen Holler, RN at St. Vincent Kokomo.
And that caring is why St. Vincent Health was voted Best Employer for the second consecutive year by its associates. With a family-like environment, excellent benefits, opportunities for development and a genuine sense of being cared about, St. Vincent Health is truly a place associates love to call home.
On March 20, 2012, St. Vincent Indianapolis received a call from the Magnet Recognition Program. "It is really a privilege to call you this morning," said Craig Luzinski, MSN, RN, FACHE, director of the Magnet Recognition Program. "As you know, the Commission on Magnet has recently reviewed the findings from your written documentation, as well as your recent site visit, which is quite an extensive review. You have obviously been involved in this for quite a period of time, and based on that review and the feedback given, it is my high honor and privilege to let you know that the Commission on Magnet has designated St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center a Magnet designated facility. It is a nursing designation, but everyone in the organization shares in the celebration."
St. Vincent Indianapolis has been designated as a Magnet organization by the Magnet Recognition Program, a part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This credential means that we are one of fewer than 7 percent of the hospitals in the country who meet the rigorous standards for nursing excellence, held by the ANCC.

St. Vincent Indianapolis has received an "A" rating for Hospital Safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.A Blue Ribbon Panel of the nation's top patient safety experts provided guidance to The Leapfrog Group to develop the Hospital Safety Score, which is calculated using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections.
The Hospital Safety Score website, www.hospitalsafetyscore.org allows visitors to search hospital scores at no cost, and provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.
The safety measurements the Hospital Safety Score considers represent the very basic blocks of medical care, such as hand-washing, computerized medication control and nurse staffing levels.
The Leapfrog Group's goal is to give patients the vital information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital. This score will enable people to talk with their doctor, make informed decisions about where to seek care, and take the right precautions during a hospital stay. For the first time, the Hospital Safety Score will highlight the country's best hospitals and warn against the worst to save lives and bring attention to the nation's silent safety epidemic.
Fuad Hammoudeh
Fuad Hammoudeh, FACHE, brings more than 30 years of expertise from senior positions at regional and national healthcare organizations, most recently IU Health, where he was administrator of the IU Simon Cancer Center and IU School of Medicine's division of hematology/oncology.
Why did you choose to join St. Vincent?
St. Vincent is unique because we offer care of the mind, body and spirit and realize their interconnectedness. I've been in other organizations that say their approach is holistic, but they don't practice what they say. Here holism is practiced at every level of the organization. It is embedded in the culture.
Why have you specialized in oncology administration?
Helping patients is a noble cause; helping cancer patients I think is one of the highest callings because of the severity of the illness and challenges for the patients and their loved ones. My hope is one day we all don't have jobs because we've discovered cures for every type of cancer. We are blessed to have the one of the best teams of cancer specialists, nurses and associates to ensure our cancer patients are supported through their complex and challenging journey.
What are your goals for St. Vincent Cancer Care?
To be recognized as the best patient-centered cancer care program in the state, caring for patients and their loved ones in a holistic body-mind-spirit approach from prevention and screening through diagnosis and treatment and survivorship. To reach our goal, we need to be a high reliable, safe and loving ministry, and serve our cancer patients with the highest quality care as measured by evidenced-base guidelines, pathways and excellent outcomes.
Additional goals are supporting patients and their loved ones throughout the continuum of care with patient navigators; providing the latest treatment options and modalities including clinical trials; enhancing our multidisciplinary clinical programs; implementing oncology electronic medical records; and further enhancing screening and diagnostic, supportive care and survivorship services.
What are the positive changes you've witnessed in oncology delivery?
The shift to patient-focused and holistic care, new targeted therapies, more sensitive technology for early screening and detection, and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

St. Vincent Anderson Regional has been recognized as a National Top Workplace according to the first annual National Top Workplaces list compiled by Workplace Dynamics. Saint John's was also named one of the Top Workplaces in Indiana, and among the top 10 workplaces overall in the state.
This is the third consecutive year Anderson Regional has been recognized as a Top Workplace award winner in the large company category in a survey conducted by Workplace Dynamics and sponsored by the Indianapolis Star.
Employees nominate the company, and if the company agrees to participate, it registers; there is no fee to participate. Workplace Dynamics surveys the employees with a series of questions. At least 70 percent of employees have to participate to qualify. The survey has 24 questions asking about the direction of the organization, the execution of that direction, career advancement, management, working conditions, and pay and benefits.
According to Anderson Regional President Tom VanOsdol, "The engagement of our associates and the ratings, and comments they continue to provide regarding our workplace family are truly humbling to me. It is further evidence that there really is something very special about Saint John's. I am so grateful to our associates for their dedicated service to our Mission and to our patients each and every day. I am blessed and honored to be able to celebrate with them once again this year as one of Central Indiana's Top Workplaces."
The list of National Top Workplaces aggregates results from across 30 Top Workplaces publishing partners to identify the best employers in the nation. The full list is available here. The list of National Top Workplaces is based solely on employee feedback from 805 companies surveyed with 1,000+ employees across the 30 regional Top Workplaces programs. This included survey responses from more than half a million employees.
Saint John's has also been named "Best Company to Work For in Madison County" for the second consecutive year as a result of nominations from the community in a survey conducted by the Anderson Herald Bulletin.
"These awards are a reflection of our associates, who approach their work with genuine enthusiasm and joy. While we are deeply honored to be a top workplace, we view caring for our community not as work, but as a calling," said Tom.
On Jan. 12, 2010, the sixth-deadliest earthquake in history struck the Republic of Haiti. The Haitian government reported a death toll of more than 200,000, with more than 275,000 injured, and more than 1 million left homeless.
St. Vincent Seton Specialty continues its response to Haiti after the earthquake in supporting Nehemiah Vision Ministries' community health development project in Chambrun, Haiti. Chambrun is located 12 miles northeast of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The hospital being built will provide the best medical care outside of the capital city. St. Vincent Seton Specialty is represented on the board of Nehemiah Vision Ministries.
The construction of the new hospital has not been without setback due to the earthquake and hurricanes; however, with the help of mission teams, the construction and opening date are drawing closer. The hospital plans include two surgical suites, exam rooms, a lab, in-patient beds, a pharmacy, eye clinic and dental clinic. In fiscal year 2011 St. Vincent Mercy sent about $9,000 in medication and supplies, which include 13 hospital beds to help furnish the hospital.
The project volunteers including (l-r) Linda Wooton, Colleen Malone, and Marsha Noblitt are grateful for the opportunity to take part because they have said they've gotten a bigger blessing out of this than the children.
The chaplain at St. Vincent Jennings was in a United Way meeting when she learned about the high number of kids receiving free lunches during the school year. She began wondering what these kids did during the summer. It broke her heart to think about these families with no money or gas who no longer could count on getting their lunches from school. She wanted to find a way to provide these children with nutritious lunches during those months they were out of school.
Colleen began speaking with her peers and the St. Vincent Jennings mission team in the last week of May. The mission team became heavily involved with the project, along with an overwhelming community response from the St. Vincent Medical Group, support staff, visiting nurses, school teachers, local churches, and the Jennings County Health Department. Thanks to these combined efforts, the team was able to start providing lunches by early June.
"The ability to provide food has grown tremendously through all the community support," said Colleen.
Throughout the summer, volunteers prepared food and assembled the meals every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in a housing addition not far from the children who would take advantage of the nutritious lunches. The number coming to receive meals grew every week. They were brought by neighbors, carpools, and one week, arrived being pulled behind a tractor to take advantage of the lunch program.
Colleen is now affectionately known as "the food lady" to a lot of the children who have been helped through the program. "This has been a delightful project because of the relationships we have made with the children," said Colleen. "The project volunteers are grateful for the opportunity to take part because they have said they've gotten a bigger blessing out of this than the children. I'm confident that we are making a difference. I am hopeful this is a community group now that will be able to move forward with the program for years to come."
St. Vincent Health aims to be a place that top-notch health professionals want to call home. We realize this can only happen when our associates feel a genuine sense of being cared about, so we do everything we can to create a family-like environment as well as offer excellent benefits and provide opportunities for professional development.
That’s why St. Vincent Health has been voted “Best Employer” for two consecutive years by its associates, but don’t take our word for it. Here’s what a few of our associates had to say about us.
"The best thing about working here is the attitude of caring, which is demonstrated among fellow associates and reflected in the provision of care to our patients and within the community as a whole."
Sharon McKnight, RN, case manager at St. Vincent Anderson Regional
"We have a large voice. Our opinions and concerns are frequently sought after associate surveys, forums, and relaxed chat sessions with our leadership."
Mike Bradshaw, team leader, engineering services at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital
"I was interested in seeking a position at St. Vincent Health because I liked what I saw in the people who worked there-a strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the organization and a desire to do everything they do with excellence and in a caring manner."
Jim Funk, director of organizational development at St. Vincent Health
"The main reason I love my job is the feeling of satisfaction I get in knowing that every day what I do helps people get appropriate treatment."
Mary Beck, microbiology charge technician at St. Vincent Kokomo
