The High-Risk Obstetrical Unit specializes in helping expectant moms with various health needs, such as:
Everyone on the High-Risk Obstetrical Unit Staff at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital is experienced in high-risk deliveries. That staff includes:
Neonatologists from the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) assist families that include babies with special needs.
Most women seek consultation from a maternal fetal medicine specialist because they are “at risk” and considering pregnancy, or because they are pregnant and have been classified as “high-risk” or “complicated” by their primary obstetric provider. This is often the case for first-time mothers who have chosen to start their family after age 35.
Whenever possible, patients with pre-existing medical conditions or a history of prior obstetrical complications are encouraged to see a specialist for preconception counseling — to discuss possible risks and prepare a plan for a successful pregnancy.
What is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist?
A maternal fetal medicine specialist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has specialized training in the management of obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy. A maternal fetal medicine specialist can provide care for both the mother and baby (fetus) in a complicated pregnancy.
Maternal fetal medicine specialists, located in the Professional Building adjacent to the hospital, will work with your primary physician, providing consultations, co-management or direct care for high-risk pregnancy.
Who Might be Referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist?
Patients with pregnancy-related conditions such as:
Patients with maternal medical disorders that may influence pregnancy:
Our maternal fetal medicine specialists operate out of St. Vincent Women’s, St. Vincent Carmel, and St. Vincent Fishers Hospitals to provide complete coverage to both facilities.

The St. Vincent Carmel newborn intensive care unit (NICU) is uniquely designed to meet the complex needs of premature and sick newborns. Recently remodeled with family-centered care in mind, the private rooms help create a healing environment for these babies and their families. Additionally, the NICU is staffed around the clock with experienced neonatologists, neonatal nursing staff and specially-trained respiratory therapists. Should the need arise, St. Vincent Carmel neonatal medical staff work closely with their counterparts at St. Vincent Women’s NICU and pediatric subspecialists at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital to manage the most critically ill and complex situations.
The loss of a pregnancy or infant is difficult and painful. Although research and medicine have made great progress over the years, most perinatal losses still go unexplained. At St. Vincent Women’s Hospital, we provide education, comfort, and healing for parents searching for answers and peace.
St. Vincent’s Center for Perinatal Loss offers programs and resources for grieving families in a warm, healing environment. Although nothing can erase the pain caused by the loss of a child, we can help ease it, guide you toward healing, and perhaps help you find hope for your next pregnancy.
