The specialists in hand and upper extremity care at the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center treat both acute injuries and chronic disorders of the hand, wrist and elbow, with an emphasis on helping you regain function and independence.
Shoulder pain can limit your motion, stability and strength. You may be surprised just how many people have had to change their lifestyles because of severe pain, aching or stiffness in their shoulders. The reasons for shoulder pain are many and can include shoulder arthritis, rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement syndrome, shoulder instability and frozen shoulder.

Because your hands are key to your independence, getting the right treatment for your injury or condition is critical. At the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center, we are committed to taking a coordinated approach to the care of hand, elbow and wrist conditions. This approach assists in the efficient diagnosis and treatment of your injury.
Working with your physician and other specialists to coordinate your treatment, we provide patient education services to help you learn about your injury or disease and what you can do to aid your recovery. We work closely with rehabilitation professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, to help you maintain and increase the functional use of your hands, wrists and elbows.
We offer both medical and surgical treatments for hand and upper extremity disorders.
Surgical intervention for hand and upper extremity disorders can range from simple, outpatient procedures (such as the removal of ganglion cysts) to complex reconstruction of the hand in the event of a traumatic injury.
If your physician determines that your injury requires surgery, you will be referred to our Surgery Evaluation Center. Located on the first floor of the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center, the Surgery Evaluation Center is where all your pre-operative testing – chest x-rays, blood tests, physical exams – will be done.
Results from the pre-op testing are entered directly into your chart, which is readily available for your physician to refer to as necessary. Your surgeon will receive notification of any concerns that may arise from the pre-op testing so that he or she can determine whether your surgery can take place as scheduled.
On the day of your surgery, you will come back to the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center, where the registration process will be quick and easy, thanks to pre-registration that is done by phone several days before your surgery date.
Your procedure will be performed in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites, built to allow surgeons to teleconference with other specialists when necessary. The pre-operative and recovery areas where you will be treated are used for orthopedic patients only.
If your operation requires an overnight stay, you will be cared for in an inpatient unit dedicated to patients with hand and upper extremity injuries. The staff on this unit has specialized training and expertise in helping patients with orthopedic injuries recover and return to normal activities as quickly as possible.
