Experience the miracle of birth with the St. Vincent Monogram Maternity approach. At all of our Indiana maternity locations, you and your baby will have access to the highest level of care you need, when you need it.
The obstetricians, maternity nurse navigators, midwives, and labor and delivery nurses offer a variety of comfort options and baby bonding opportunities. We also offer post-partum support for breastfeeding moms and for women experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
If there is a complication in your pregnancy, either a maternal health or fetal health concern, ask about perinatal care. The maternal fetal medicine (MFM) physicians coordinate care in collaboration with your OB to monitor and manage high-risk pregnancies. If your baby has a fetal condition, our neonatologists and pediatric specialists are also part of the perinatal care team.
And if there an emergency, the St. Vincent One Call MFM First Response Team is ready with special critical care transport for mother and baby.

Seeking a more comfortable birthing experience? St. Vincent now offering another option to personalize your birthing experience. Nitrous oxide or, as it’s more commonly known, laughing gas available at St. Vincent.
Overview of service: Nitrous oxide is a nonflammable, tasteless, odorless gas. It is commonly used for labor pain management in many Western countries and beginning to be used more in the United States.
Why a woman would use: Nitrous oxide is a non-narcotic option for pain relief. Nitrous oxide is safe for both mom and baby. The gas works very quickly (two to three breaths) and is eliminated very rapid within a few breaths of breathing normal room air. The patient controls the flow of the nitrous oxide by applying the mask to their face to get a tight seal and then the gas flows as the patients breaths normally in and out.
Who is a good candidate: Patients in early and active labor are candidates and those wishing for a natural childbirth. Your nurse and physician will determine if the patient is not a candidate due to medical history.
Nitrous oxide is meant to be an adjunct pain management option. We have many tools in our labor and delivery toolbox that the nurses are trained in to support a mother coping with labor pain. Those include labor balls, labor tubs, aromatherapy, wireless fetal monitoring for more mobility, IV narcotic pain medications, nitrous oxide, and epidurals. Our goal is to ensure the patient gets to design and have the labor and delivery experience they want in the safest place possible for them and their baby.
Skin-to-skin care, also known as “kangaroo care,” means early and continuous holding of your naked baby with your bare chests touching, allowing mom and baby to be close. This contact increases bonding and provides many benefits to baby.
Skin-to-skin care should begin immediately after birth, unless there are complications with the baby. Once the child is born, your care team will place the baby on your abdomen to cut the umbilical cord and dry the baby off with blankets. 60 to 90 minutes of skin-to-skin care after birth are recommended to provide the maximum benefit for you and baby.
Place your baby on your bare chest, facing you. Cover the baby’s back with a blanket. Then relax and enjoy!
If the mother is unable to provide skin-to-skin care, the father or support person may step in to provide this care.
Yes; skin-to-skin care can also be continued while at home. Skin-to-skin care is a great way to strengthen your relationship as parent and child. Remember to make sure the house is kept at a warm temperature and to cover the baby’s back with a blanket.
There are several benefits of using skin-to-skin care. Many of the immediate benefits are listed below. Long-term benefits include fewer infections, improved attachment, and increases in social and motor development.
The loss of a pregnancy or infant is difficult and painful. Although research and medicine have made great progress over the years, most perinatal losses still go unexplained. At St. Vincent Women’s Hospital, we provide education, comfort, and healing for parents searching for answers and peace.
St. Vincent’s Center for Perinatal Loss offers programs and resources for grieving families in a warm, healing environment. Although nothing can erase the pain caused by the loss of a child, we can help ease it, guide you toward healing, and perhaps help you find hope for your next pregnancy.

Now is the time to focus on you.
Many women will experience some mild mood changes during pregnancy or after the birth of their baby, but one in seven women will experience more significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. These more significant mood changes may be Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD). They can occur anytime during pregnancy and during the first year after baby is born.
Perinatal Care starts when your obstetrician identifies a maternal or fetal concern. There are many types of high-risk pregnancies. The maternal fetal medicine (MFM) physicians are experts in high-risk pregnancies. If your baby has a fetal condition, our neonatologists and pediatric specialists are also part of your perinatal care team.
