Each person’s experience is like no other and for this reason meal planning, recipes, when and how to take supplements will vary. As you lose weight all of these step are designed to be flexible and to adapt to the needs of your body. Use this information as a guideline.
Remember with the more than 600,000 foods to choose from there will be many foods that you can eat, but portion control takes practice. Focus on lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and healthy starches. We encourage you to start with 75-90 grams of protein daily after surgery and work with your bariatric dietitian to make personal adjustments to your needs. If you are experiencing poor healing, hair loss, muscle loss or lack of energy, it may be due to protein calorie malnutrition. Contact your Bariatric dietitian immediately.

Being physically active and weight loss go hand-in-hand. Many benefits include:
There are many opportunities to increase your daily activity. Talk to Dr. Creel, clinical exercise physiologist, about an exercise plan that fits your needs. Here are a few options to consider:
Tip 1 – Start slow – After bariatric surgery begin exercising as soon as your surgeon gives you the all clear. Then gradually add more minutes and activities.
Tip 2 — Our Exercise Trainer at the St. Vincent Bariatric Center for Excellence can help you create a personalized exercise plan that adapts to your weight loss goals.
Tip 3 – Stay hydrated, remember to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. The more the better.
Tip 4 — Mix it up, walk the dog, then pick up the pace, swim or do water aerobics, use the treadmill, bicycle, elliptical at a local fitness center. Every day, exercise should be part of your routine just like your meal planning. Mark it on your calendar.
