EMPOWERED is Enhancing Minority Partnership Opportunities Working to
Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Disparities. This collaboration involves the
Indiana State Department of Health Office of Minority Health (SOMH),
the Indiana Area Health Education Center (IN-AHEC), the Indiana Minority
Health Coalition (IMHC), as well as other state and regional partners.
The EMPOWERED program is being piloted at Imagine East Learning
Center, a local charter school in Indianapolis. Healthcare
professionals are recruited as mentors who have weekly contact with 6th
and 7th graders at Imagine East. Each month, mentors meet with students
at their school and encourage their studies, positive choices, and give
students an introduction to healthcare as a career choice.
